Set Your Goals

Do you have a goal in mind?  Once you attain the mindset for you to attain financial freedom, its time to set your personal goals, both financially and in relationships.

But first, what are goals?  Why should you set them?  Having a goal helps give you direction of where to move and how to recognize when you reach a major milestone.  The following story shows the importance of setting goals.

"Ukey is a fresh graduate who is bonded to a government agency for four years.  Knowing that he will not want to stay after the 4 years, he failed to set a goal for himself in his work.  Instead, he set other goals for himself outside his work, in relationship, family, friends and financial freedom.  Over the past 3 years, he grew increasingly unhappy in his work, and his performance at work remains above average.

However, he currently has a good relationship with his girlfriend and family, made and maintain close friendships with his good friends, and currently has sufficient passive income to maintain financial security.

He has recently created a goal in his work, to make the new maintenance contract one that will reduce workload on his colleagues to a manageable level.  We'll see how far he moves along his new goal."

By setting a definite goal, a person will know where he wants to go, and try to achieve the goal.  Even if he doesn't hit the goal, he will go somewhere nearer the goal then he was originally.  From there, he can adjust his strategy and finally reach the goal after several iterations.

On the contrary, by not setting a goal, you won't know where you wanna go.  There is a saying that goes:-

If you don't know where you wanna go, any road may take you there.

My question is whether the place the road takes you to is where you wanna be?  Remember the story of the ugly duckling?  If the ugly duckling doesn't know what he wanna be (a swan), he will continue being the odd one out, the underachiever of the gang.  Even if he becomes a very successful duck, will he be happy?  When deep in his heart, he is a swan?  The purpose of setting a goal is to prevent yourself from becoming successful in something you don't want, and does not make you happy in the end.

Seeing the difference between having a definite goal and not having any, is it time for you to set your own goal in your work as well as your life?
